nghenvironmental completed the design, planning and environmental assessment for what will be Australia's highest building; a public toilet at Rawsons Pass, 200 metres from the summit of Mt Kosciuszko. Our multidisciplinary project team included environmental planners, an architect, engineer, landscape architect, archaeologist and a consulting toilet expert. Planning for this high use facility was challenging, being located at a remote, extremely sensitive and climatically harsh site. The project was undertaken for the NSW Department of Environment and Conservation.
This project involved a detailed site analysis, and included preparation of the options paper "Between a Rock and a Hard Place". The challenge was met by ensuring a functional facility that meets visitor comfort and safety, and is able to function under blizzard, deep snow and low temperature conditions. The proposed structure will blend into the alpine landscape, and the risk of it impacting on the cultural and natural environment will be low. The toilet will be inconspicuous, with a low profile, and it will integrate into the surrounding landform. nghenvironmental envisage that the building will be constructed during the 2004/2005 summer building season.
