EMS in Agriculture

Design of Bega Cheese Environmental Management System Pilot Program

nghenvironmental prepared two rounds of funding submissions on behalf of the Bega Co-operative Society Ltd. (Bega Cheese) and were eventually successful in securing $367,500 funding for Bega Cheese to develop and implement  an EMS based on the principles of ISO14001, on 20 participating dairy farmers within the Bega Valley.  The funding is part of the Federal government’s Natural Heritage Trust funding administered by the Federal Department of Agriculture, Fisheries and Forestry (DAFF).

Bids for funding were very competitive with Bega Cheese being one of fifteen successful industry sectors throughout Australia out of a total of 125 submissions.

The submissions incorporated the usual components of an ISO 14001 EMS with a number of added extras including the preparation of Property Catchment Plans (Whole Farm Plans), a Life Cycle Analysis study of a 250 gram block of standard Bega Cheese, an EMS training and awareness component, collation of Key Performance Indicators (KPI’s) and the presentation of various EMS models to be adopted on farm.

Both funding submissions were prepared by Senior Project Officer, John Turville, who came to nghenvironmental from Darwin, where he had been working with the Federal Department of Environment and Heritage coordinating the Eco-Efficiency Agreement between Environment Australia and the Northern Territory Chamber of Commerce and Industry.  In this role, John developed Environmental Codes of Practice (COP) for the NT Mango Industry in order to facilitate the introduction of “clean and green” horticultural practices into the Northern Territory Mango Industry and to capitalise on the Northern Territory’s relatively clean status as a horticultural producer.  John also delivered communication and awareness programs to both the NT Department of Buisness Industry and Resource Development and the NT Mango Industry Association (NTMIA).

The codes of practice can be viewed by clicking on the Mango photo below.
