Sustainable Tourism
nghenvironmental has been actively involved in the planning, assessment, design and management of tourist related activities since its inception in 1992. Our work often involves assisting business, government, NGOs and the community in navigating their way through the complexities of tourism development and associated strategic planning. We also facilitate best practice planning and management of proposed tourist developments and we have assisted many companies in achieving their goal of developing tourism facilities, often in unique and sensitive locations. Some of our assignments in the field of tourism have included: - Development of an Environmental Management System (EMS) on behalf of Kosciusko Thredbo Pty. Ltd. (Thredbo Alpine Resort) based on Green Globe 21, an internationally recognised environmental benchmarking, certification and improvement system for sustainable travel and tourism. This project, which is currently underway, involves the development of environmental strategies and programs to facilitate the incorporation of an EMS into Thredbo’s operations and those of their sub-lessees. To find out more about Greenglobe 21 and nghenvironmental's services to those seeking accreditation, view our Powerpoint presentation (622Kb, Microsoft Powerpoint required).
- Preparation of a human waste management strategy for the Main Range Management Unit, Kosciuszko National Park an area that receives very high visitor levels during the summer and winter months.
- Preparation of an Environment Management Plan for the highly popular walking tracks within the Main Range Management Unit, in the alpine zone of Kosciuszko National Park, NSW. This included the iconic walking track to Australia’s highest mountain, Mt. Kosciuszko.
- Snowy Wilderness Farm based tourist facility, south of Jindabyne on the Barry Way. This facility is currently being developed for use as a tourist facility for the adventurous tourist to ride quad bikes, horse ride and to encounter a realistic and invigorating high mountain experience. We assisted the property developer with initial tourist planning and related environmental assessments.
- Kosciusko Mountain Retreat, Sawpit Creek, Jindabyne (Australia’s highest all season family holiday park) – we assisted our client with the planning and assessment of a proposed refurbishment to the existing cabins and infrastructure within this highly prized tourist retreat.
- A residential development at Tathra on behalf of Canberra Investment Corporation Limited (CIC) involving an ecotourism facility that would occupy an area of 1.5 hectares. It involves best practice residential design and development on the shores of the Bega River estuary on the pristine Far South Coast of NSW.
- Completion of the environmental planning and assessment for the development of a tourist visitor centre (the “Inflomation Centre”) at Murray 1 Power Station at the headwaters of the Murray River. This was completed for Snowy Hydro Limited.

Some of the advantages of taking a sustainable tourism approach include: - Assurance to stakeholders of a strong commitment to your triple bottom line (economic, environment and social).
- Assurance to banks investors and insurers of sound business practice and risk management.
- Reduced overheads and improved performance through efficient management of your resources.
- Creation of a sense of worth, pride and inspiration in staff.
- Access to new markets and niches of opportunity by focusing on customer expectations.
- Creation of an image of your company as environmentally responsible, in the eyes of customers and the general public.
- For non-business organisations, as well as providing for environmental protection, sustainable tourism can also bring economic benefits and form a source of community inspiration, contributing to the social and economic vitality of local regions.
